Nothing amazing, just some practice questions for Level 2 Access Maths students. Covers areas of rectangles, triangles and composite shapes, together with circumference of a circle, and area of a circle. The worksheet also has a couple of those problems like [...]

Adding Fractions: traditional approachView more presentations from keithpeter.
The slideshare presentation above is my attempt at explaining how to add fractions to a group of students taking the Level 1 Adult Numeracy Certificate. This particular group is aiming at joining an Access to Higher Education course next year, and so I’m using a more ‘academic’ style [...]

“Apart from Bowman, I can think of only two Google employees I could stand to be around for longer than an elevator ride. ” Joe Clark
Superb rant from Joe Clark, via daringfireball. I want to read that Susan Pinker book. I think I may have ‘male brain’ tendencies, but I know two people who box [...]

Uploaded the screencast about tree diagrams to MoleTV as a test of their system and embedding. I just uploaded the original .mov file I made using iShowU on my iBook. I’ll try a .mov converted from an .ogg file recorded on Ubuntu later, shame there is no direct support for .ogg files. MoleTV converts to [...]

I can reassure the BlackCover blog people that an Alwych notebook will last. The notebooks above cover around 7 years of random notes, including one that got drenched in a North Sea storm and another that got dropped in a river. The paper is thick enough not to ‘show through’ with the heaviest of gel [...]

Slideshare from an OpenOffice Impress presentation on the basics of fractions. Based on an idea from Malcolm C. It worked for his students so I’ll try it out with my Level 1 Adult Numeracy students.

Thanks to Geoff Rebbeck for telling us how PebblePad is used in his college. PebblePad is a rich system, so I should not have been so surprised that the way its being used at Thanet is so different to the way I’ve seen the system for assessed portfolios.

The new building has IWs in each room (240+ across all the campusses), with PCs in teaching rooms. Staff do not have laptops, staff PCs are allocated to staff rooms. There is a campus wide wifi for students so they can use their own laptops – the students authenticate and are taken to a landing [...]

I’m attending an unconference tomorrow at Gloucester College. This event is supported by a community page on the ning.com social networking site, I’ll link to that when the event is over. Ning is easy to use as a participant and provides a range of tools (photo, video sharing, automatic generation of slide shows from photos, [...]

@blazingfruit on twitter will reach me now. I’ll be using this page to let people know where I am and when as I’m teaching across three campusses (campii?) this year. Twitter won’t send updates to my phone in the UK - you need to have a Vodaphone account to receive updates – but I can [...]

Download PDF file containing a one side worksheet with 28 questions covering the four functions, writing numbers from words and rounding. Numerical answers on the sheet.
The graphic above (taken on my little Fuji compact digital camera in macro mode) shows my check answer for the long multiplication. I had to actually calculate the answer as [...]

“As an editor I knew that almost anything can be cut to 300 words; the material is somewhere in the marble, waiting to be quarried out.”
William Zinsser – I’ve just ordered the book. Next year’s study skills module for HND will have some short writing tasks that will give students time and the incentive to [...]
